Born on September 1, 1963 in Seoul, Lee Insik has had opportunities to listen to various classical musics since his birth under the influence of his father who was, then, pastor in a church. He had been inspired by these opportunities and this, during his years in elementary and middle school, helped him to shape and lead the way to his composing career.

In 1979, he entered Seoul High School of Music and Art to further seek and pursue his desire for composing.

During his undergraduate years at Seoul National University, he first encountered the concept of contemporary music and deeply realized that it is an essential genre of music which will convey and sympathize people¡¯s thoughts in our time.

With his promotion to the third year, he became the leader for Electronic Music Study and was also attracted to electronic music. He had learnt conducting form J.Wuller who, by then, stayed in Korea as the chairman for German culture organization (Goethe Institut). He got the first place in Joongang Competition in 1985.

He graduated with his own works, ¡®Three Flutes and Piccolo for Analog¡¯ and ¡®A Piece for Electronic Taped Music¡¯.

In 1986, he went to Germany to continue his studies in Composition by starting his postgraduate programmes in Hochschule der kunste. Professor F. Martin Olbrisch, who is now in Dresden Hochschule, kindly explained him not only the cultural differences but also resulting differences in expressions and ideas. He also worked in the contemporary music department of the professional contemporary music press, ¡®Bote & Bock¡¯.

He came back to Korea in 1994 and has taken part in various works in many societies. The societies include Asian Composer¡¯s League, ISCM (Section of Korea), and Seoul Society of Contemporary Music (SSCM).

In 1998, he became the professor in Sungshin Women¡¯s University and naturally could have more freedom to express his own musical philosophy.

The year 2008 was the turning point for his composing ideology. Since then, he realized that the existing contemporary music has overlooked the significance of commoners¡¯ pleasure of listening to music. Therefore, he decided to compose musics which can sympathize the messages of the music with the commoners.

In 2011, he finally composed his first compilation of Arirang works, ¡®Arirang 2011¡¯ and still has a great interest in further developing it.
